between Wawona and the Glacier Point Road intersection through August. During the summer, Glacier Point is often crowded with tourists. Beware of road closures in the Vegas area tonight and tomorrow night, and Sept. It’s said to be the most scenic drive in the Yosemite National Park. Situated at the end of the 16-mile-long Glacier Point Road, it overlooks Yosemite Valley, Half Dome and numerous, majestic waterfalls. At the summit it feels almost as if you could step right off into the clouds and fly among craggy Sierra Nevada peaks. At this elevation, the road typically closes after the first big winter storm arrives in November and opens again in late May, but both dates can vary. The summit offers great views of several of Yosemite National Park's most scenic spots. The road ends at Glacier Point, a viewpoint above Yosemite Valley at an elevation of 7,214 feet (2,199 m) above the sea level. Expect 30-minute delays, Monday through Friday, 6 am to 9 pm. good parking across the road and valet parking at reasonable rates. Glacier Point Road Rehabilitation Project (20) Construction work is at multiple locations along the road between Chinquapin and Glacier Point. The road is planned to remain shut throughout 2021, to allow complete repaving, straightening of some tight bends, and improvements to parking areas. 0.4 km Points of Interest & Landmarks Parks. The existing roadway was c ompleted in 1936, replacing the original wagon road built in 1882. I’m still figuring out what belongs on my bucket list of cycling, but with Glacier Point I now have a starting….point.The curvy road is 26km (16-mile) long running west-east from Wawona Road to Glacier Point. Unfortunately, the road is closed for entirely for 2022, but I would advise keeping an eye on Tioga Pass because that road offers cyclist only closures as well, albeit on a different timeframe. Glacier Point is one of the most popular viewpoints in Yosemite National Park and offers unparalleled views of Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Falls and the famous Half Dome peak. If I could do it again, I’d plan around picnicking and spending a few hours because this is a moment I’ll never forget. I approached Half Dome thinking what the first person who laid eyes on this view thought, something that easily crosses your mind in this solitude. Reaching Glacier Point is one of my greatest highlights in cycling, not that it was any type of physical achievement, but this was a, quiet, somber experience made possible only by bike. You’re shut in for a good part of the ride by these sky reaching trees, but I found it calming to look up and realize how out of scale I felt. The climb itself was very steady and didn’t have to get out of the saddle except briefly at the start of the return. Seeing how temps can still linger around freezing, I was fortunate enough to get away with a few layers, but temps heated up fast as the sun gained exposure. Starting at 7am, I was prepared for some type of cold, especially beginning at 6,000 feet. Glacier Point Road Expect 30-minute delays, Monday through Friday, 6 am to 9 pm. And the DW and I were there while on our Honeymoon in 1969, just days before the old hotel up there burned down. From the NPS: 'Glacier Point Road will open no earlier than July, probably later, due to heavy snow and construction.' Note that this road is 100 closed to visitors. This area attracts high volumes of traffic year-round because it provides access to. The existing road was completed in 1936, replacing the original wagon road built in 1882. The road will be open sometime after early July, 2023, with 30-minute delays. The plan is still to open sometime in 2023 but to have delays. Glacier Point Road was closed to all traffic in 2022 to rehabilitate and improve the road. Expect delays and one-lane sections of road. Re: Glacier Point Road Closure 2022 advice Ive been to Glacier Point many times over the years (including back in the day when they did the Fire Fall and had a ranger talk before pushing over the coals). Glacier Point Road was closed all of 2022 for rehabilitation, and some critical work did not get completed. Tioga Road (continuation of Highway 120 through the park) No drinking water or services available. I was so excited, that I woke up three hours earlier (1:30am) and decided to make a run for it to ensure I had plenty of time to take it in. Hetch Hetchy Road When open, hours are 7 am to 9 pm. For five years, I had been following this announcement, but unfortunately time didn’t match up until I was lucky that the last day it was closed to traffic coincided with my Bay Area trip.
